The Princess and the Frog

For the first time ever, Disney is coming out with its first movie featuring an African American princess! The musical will be opening this month in New York and Los Angeles and everywhere else in December.
The story is set in New Orleans where the princess Tiana is a working waitress. She only imagines being royal and has hopes of opening a french restaurant.
Broadway singer and Dreamgirls Anika Noni Rose will be starring as Tiana and songs will be written by Randy Newman. Oprah Winfrey will be doing the voice for Tiana's mother.
So far the movie has made great reviews with Time magazine calling it a "start-to-finish delight." Entertainment Weekly also says that the G-rated movie is "a fresh twist on the classic fairy tale."
I am a HUGE Disney movie fan and since I am also an African American female, I am extremely excited about this movie coming out and I hope that it is another Disney hit!

I recently watched a news story that focused on a five year old girl named Shanyia Davis. She was only under her mothers care for a couple weeks and was used for prostitution. Her mother apparently sold her to a man who brought her to a hotel room and did God knows what with her. Yesterday, they found that little girl's body near deer carcasses in the trash. That's right, at only 5 years old she was found dead. Her father regrets giving his daughter to her birth mother. She had just recently found a new job and home and his intention was only to allow his daughter the chance to have a mother in her life.
I can not fathom how any mother could do that to her child. What kind of sick person could do something so terrible. At five years old, she was placed in a dangerous situation that could do nothing but harm her and it did...in the most fatal way.
The mother has been charged with human trafficking anf felony child abuse and the man with kidnapping. No one has been charged with murder but it seems like both should be. Had it not been for their actions, Shanyia Davis would still be alive with the chance to live a happy life, like any five year old girl should.

Good Hair

So recently I watched a movie called Good Hair. It has caused a stir inside and out of the black community. People nationwide are being challenged to evaluate the meaning of "good hair" and what differentiates that hair from bad hair. Throughout the documentary, Chris Rock talks to everyone from the people who make or donate the hair that women use for weave and wigs to the people who buy it at their local beauty supply store or salon. He also covers topics like perms and the chemicals used inside of it, includes celebrity insight about their own hair and maintenance and highlights a hair show taken place in Atlanta, Georgia. The documentary is brilliant and Chris Rock captures the epitome of genius while addressing a sensitive subject.
